Why should you choose to Op Shop?

Op shopping over the years has had it’s dedicated following, where those who love it, LOVE IT. Those who don’t love it however, have their list of reasons as to why, and I know this because I used to be one of these people. They say things like “but if it’s used, it won’t be in good condition” “you don’t know where it’s been” “I’d rather have something new”. I’m here to tell you, that Op Shops will not accept things that aren’t in sellable condition, they ensure everything is cleaned, disinfected and washed before put out onto the shop floor and these clothes are just waiting to be given new life.

Now that we’ve debunked the reasons as to why you shouldn’t op shop, let me tell the reasons why you absolutely should.

You are supporting your community and the wider environment. Op Shops are not for profit and provide charity to multiple communities in need. The Good Sammy’s provide jobs for people with disability where more than 50% of their employees are made up of people with disability. Externally they provide charity for families seeking help with the NDIS. The Vinnies and their funds go towards providing funding to counselling for those in financial difficulty, housing services, youth service and more. These are just a few of the ways that your money can help through op shopping. Not to mention the benefits to the environment, op shopping helps to reduce landfill and ensure waste is limited within society.

You are saving money. Whether you’re moving houses and you want to reduce moving costs, or your kids are growing up so fast that they need a new pair of shoes every month, Op shopping allows you the space to save on costs. Op shopping has truly allowed me to save so much of my money not only due to cheap costs but because I feel less of an urge to buy new things for ridiculous prices. My first thought is always, “I should see if I can find it at the op shop first”. It has allowed me to become more thoughtful about my spending.

You are adhering to a more minimalist lifestyle and allowing for more space in your day to be mindful and present. When you Op Shop, you are naturally more thoughtful about what you buy. You are less likely to adhere to trends that you see changing on Tik Tok every two weeks because at the Op Shop there is such a variety of clothing options. It also allows you the space to develop your own sense of style and think about what is going to make you look and feel your best rather than what is trending on Instagram right now.

These are just a few of the reasons why you should choose to Op Shop. It really is a game-changer.
